Emerge From Anger - Anger management counselling
Anger is a human emotion typically triggered by painful experiences or feelings.
Anger can be constructive or destructive and can arise from various situations that have caused you to feel mistreated, opposed, injured, misunderstood, or neglected.
Do you feel that your anger is getting out of hand? Are you are losing your temper too quickly, or hurting those around you? If yes, you do not need to suffer alone.
Anger management counselling gives you the tools to transform destructive, uncontrolled anger, into something positive and productive. If you would like to learn to control your anger and live a calmer, more harmonious life, contact me today for a free consultation.
What is Anger?
Anger can be beneficial as it serves an evolutionary purpose. We can feel angry in response to a threat or danger and it is part of our survival system. It alerts us to threatening situations and reflects our boundaries. This automatic process is known as ‘fight or flight’, and anger is part of the emotional response activation. This survival mechanism helps us to either defeat a threat (fight) or run from it (flight).
In a situation where anger is triggered, this survival mechanism is activated, causing neurotransmitters in the brain to release the ‘stress hormones’ adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones increase our heart rate, send energy to the major muscle groups, and create a sense of alertness and tension. They get the body ready for action.
A healthy expression of anger allows for this tension to be released and for the body to return to harmonious balance. If the anger is expressed destructively, it can have negative consequences for those around you. However, if expressing anger is inhibited, the tension remains stored in the body, causing increased frustration and physical and psychological issues.
Anger becomes most harmful when it is suppressed or denied by the person experiencing it.
Our upbringing, conditioning, and cultural background directly affects how we perceive anger and how we express it. For example, suppressing anger can result from witnessing other people’s destructive behaviours, becoming frightened of our own temper, or being explicitly taught not to show anger.
Anger management therapy enables you to explore your anger issues and the underlying causes and teaches you techniques that activate your rational mind, allowing you to choose to respond to your feelings of anger creatively rather than allowing them to control you.
What are the consequences of Anger?
When anger becomes a problem it has numerous negative consequences, including:
Behavioural effects
Alienation of friends, family, or co-workers
Loss of status in the workplace
Addiction to substances
Compulsive behaviours
Bullying or shaming others
Emotional effects
Depression
Anxiety
Lack of self-worth
Physical effects
High blood pressure
Inflammatory diseases
Digestive issues
Heart and circulatory problems
Weakened immune system
Controlling your anger has few detrimental consequences to your health or interpersonal relationships. However, hostile, out of control, or aggressive anger can seriously impact all aspects of your life and has even been connected to a risk of early mortality.
Anger management counselling will assist you in living the calm, positive life that you and your loved ones deserve.

What is Transactional Analysis?
Transactional Analysis was developed by psychiatrist Eric Berne in the 1950s, using ‘transaction’ as the fundamental element of social intercourse and ‘analysis’ as the study of the interactions between people.
Transactional Analysis uses Freud’s theory of personality – his belief that the human psyche is composed of many components that interact to produce a range of complex behaviours, attitudes, and emotions. This form of therapy aims to explore a person’s relationships and interactions with the purpose of establishing positive change and personal growth.
Transactional Analysis encourages honest, positive communication in a safe and comfortable environment. Clients are encouraged to explore their ideas of self-identity and self-worth, their desired outcomes, and any thoughts, feelings, or behaviours that could be a hinderance. New skills are practised and implemented to allow the client to maintain autonomy and control in relational and social interactions, and avoid angry outbursts.
